A group of County residents established the “Friends of Arundel Seniors,” a tax exempt organization incorporated in Maryland whose purpose was to procure, distribute and oversee the installation of home safety equipment Installations would be performed by local Kiwanis clubs in Anne Arundel County. Equipment items include bathtub safety grips, tub mats, shower chairs, bathtub transfer benches, smoke detectors, elevated toilet seats, toilet safety frames, high visibility house numbers, hand held shower heads and jar vises Funding comes from grants in aid and gifts donated by local groups and individuals FOAS is directed and run by community volunteers. HIGHLIGHTS AND EVALUATION: Today the Friends of Arundel Seniors works closely with the Anne Arundel County Department of aging for referrals and screening applicant requests. The Kiwanis Club of Annapolis contributed $3,060 to FOAS in 2003-2004. Ten of 18 members worked 225 hours installing safety equipment this year. This 55% level of participation is needed from our members to keep up with the heavy requirements in our service area. Over 40% of the workload for Anne Arundel County is accomplished by this team In 2003/2004 we assisted 106 families and installed 199 safety equipment items at a cost of $5,074 to the FOAS program. Tsunami Relief Contribution $90 Year End: 226 Projects Completed, 874 Service Hours, $9,904 Spent, 14 Interclubs 2005 - 2006 E-Builder, Nov 2005: With the football season upon us, the Kiwanis Club of Annapolis (Maryland) saw the opportunity to stage a unique fundraiser CELEBRATING the renewal of an in-state rivalry between the US Naval Academy and the University of Maryland football teams after 40 years. Advertised as an OLD GOAT - OLD TERP PEP RALLY, the event was held at the Loews Annapolis Hotel and featured an awesome Silent Auction and competitions between team supporters including passing, drop kick, putting, beer races and "packing into Volvo XC90 SUV". A contingent of Old Goats (average age 70) admirably formed a cheering squad, but the Old Terps hired the Maryland Cheerleading Team to liven up the evening, which they did Local Charities benefited from this very successful fund raiser and State of Maryland "togetherness" Kiwanis event. Yes, the University of Maryland Terrapin football team also won the game a week later, 23-20. The event raised over $8000 for local charities.
