The club had representatives at a meeting sponsored by the Triangle Sportsman's Club, on tree-planting and feeding of wild life, who presented the information thus obtained to the club at a regular meeting and also showed a picture on "Wild Life in Virginia". Had a representative meet with the Chief of Police to bring to the club information in the Police recreational program for boys and girls with the result of closer cooperation with the town council in planning recreational activities for the youth. Continued to sponsor the Key Club and sent one member of it to Boys State. Contributed $50 to Camp joy, the Salvation Army camp for underprivileged children; sponsored the local Boy Scout Troop; spent $10 for Christmas cheer for the children of a needy family. Worked with the town and county officials in an attempt to improve the local schools; provided a hot lunch for 40 children each month during the school year; provided Shoes for four children, glasses for six, and eye treatments for ten; cleared $30000 for its community welfare fund by the sale of tickets to the Southern Appalachian Horse Show; sponsored a baseball game to raise funds for the high school band; sponsored, with the assistance of the junior Woman's Club and the Eastern Star, the production of the Kiwanis Minstrels, the receipts of which were placed in the Youth Service fund; promoted church attendance of its members; had a series of meetings at which ministers of different denominations told why they were members of the denomination to which they belonged, and in some instances calling on members of the club to speak on the same subject.
