FOREWORD

It was with deep regret and sorrow that Kiwanians read in the Capital District Bulletin the announcement of the death on February 3, 1954, of Past Governor and District Historian Dr Henry A.Converse of Harrisonburg, VA. Henry served as Capital District Governor in 1932. From that time until his death, this well-loved Kiwanian served as District Historian. He wrote 3 Volumes of our Capital District History. He also served as Secretary of his local club for a number of years.

At a District Board meeting held at Old Point Comfort early in 1954, Governor Wilton H. Wallace was authorized and directed to designate a new Historian for Capital District. As a consequence, the Rev. M. S. Reifsnyder was appointed to this position. Rev. Reifsnyder served as 1939 Capital District Governor. This volume of our Capital District History is the result of his labors in this field.

The author has taken the privilege of changing the style of this History. Instead of grouping the various years covered under the headings of the club, the history appears by years and only the current year appears under each club heading.

We have attempted to include only bona fide examples of club activities. All club activities should be approved by the Board of Directors and be in charge by the proper Committee. For example: If Kiwanian Jim Smith, out of the generosity of his heart, gives a dozen underprivileged boys a fishing outing on a stream that runs through his farm, that is not an activity of the club and should not be reported as such. On the other hand, if Jim Smith is chairman of the Underprivileged Child Committee and his committee raises in the club or gets from the club treasury, funds to give a group of children an outing, and Jim, as his contribution, says "Bring them out to my place," then it is a club activity and should be reported as such. The deviation from this procedure by many club reporters has caused the author no end of trouble, but he has tried to be as fair and impartial as is possible.

As a whole, the writing of this volume has brought untold joy to the author and has been a revelation to him concerning the results of consecrated manpower working for the good of humanity. We hope it will be an inspiration to all who read it and will add zest to the reporting of Kiwanis activities in the future. God bless Kiwanis and its endeavors!

1951 Governor Arkley L. Fleming Bio:

A. L. Fleming, of Salisbury, MD, is head of the Department of Economic and Government at State Teachers College, Salisbury. He is a consultant to the State Department of Education in the Evaluation Program.

He is very active in civic and church affairs. He is a member of the Board of the Bethesda Methodist Church; a trustee for the Conference Camp for Youth and a member of the Executive Committee of the Peninsula Conference Board of Education; President of the Pocomoke Chapter of Soil Conservation Society of America; Chairman of the Legislative Committee for the Wicomico County Committee for adoption of the Hoover Report; Chairman of the Training Committee, Salisbury District, Boy Scouts of America, and is a 32nd degree Mason.

Al is married and has 1 daughter.

He served as president of the Kiwanis Club of Salisbury in 1947, LG of Division 7 in 1949 and Governor of Capital District for 1951.
